SUBHUMAN, BIG SALE!

Mixed Media Installation, 2o23

SUBHUMAN, BIG SALE! explores the struggles of a group of predominantly male migrant workers residing in the Sanhe district (Longhua) of Shenzhen, China. In a gesture of dark humor, they have dubbed themselves the "Sanhe Gods."

Caught in the unforgiving undercurrents of China's rapid economic expansion, these individuals have abandoned aspirations of success, instead focusing on scraping together enough money to survive from week to week. Their unofficial mantra, "work for one day, play for three," encapsulates their resigned attitude. The Sanhe Gods' contributions to society are reduced to menial physical labor, begging questions: does this render their lives less valuable? What is the true value of human life in the face of unrelenting capitalism?

By presenting them as commodified, cut-rate "products" - akin to meat in a butcher shop - this unsettling work challenges viewers to confront the dehumanizing effects of a society that prioritizes wealth and power above all else.
